OPALINE is not only chic and fashionable, but makes sure each piece is produced within fair working conditions, in Italy and India. It donates a percentage of its proceeds to the OM SHANTI NGO in Tiruvannamalai, South India, which cares for abandoned widows and enables them to take up a handicraft job to support themselves.
We are continuously designing special projects with them. One popular product is our patchwork elephants, the upcycled silk Pochettes, and our trademark: OPALINE Pajamas. We have started to weave our own Silk from recycled Silk Sarees on Handlooms in South India-it is very time consuming and takes one full day to weave 3m of Silk. Above you can see the process of making our upcycled silk which gets woven by Mrs Muthulakshmi, close to Tiruvannamalai. It gets checked, packed and shipped to Milan. Our Samarcand Kimono is made of this Silk, and the Gilet as well.
Currently we are trying to create our first biological handwoven, vegetable dye cotton and researching other ways to eliminate artificial fabrics. All this to emphasize that we really care about how we make our pieces and where we make them. Dress responsibly chic!
